The Role of the Molecular Pathologist

A molecular pathologist and molecular biologists are responsible for analyzing the genetic profile of a patient's tumor. They analyze tumor DNA and tumor proteins using molecular biology techniques such as PCR and next-generation sequencing.

The purpose of this analysis is to identify biomarkers to help an oncologist make patient treatment decisions based on the cancer’s molecular characteristics. Pathologists therefore work together with oncologists to manage patients and ensure that the most effective treatment possible for each patient is found.
